Päiväunia ja Pilvilinnoja (Daydreams and castles in the air)
Päiväunia ja Pilvilinnoja is a Powerpoint presentation of approx.
100 pages that deals with architecture and the broad spectrum of
the work of the architect. It includes a 20-page package of information
and background material in Word format to back up the presentation.
It has been put together by two architects, Pihla Meskanen and Jaana
Räsänen in connection with the Architects in Schools event which was
part of World Architecture Day 2004.
The presentation was intended as practical back-up material for architects visiting schools all over Finland to talk about their work and take part in various workshops on architecture. The architects who took part in the event did so on a voluntary basis and the schools did not pay for the visits. The day’s programme was coordinated by YAPA-SAFA, a subsection of the membership chapter consisting of private architects, and the following SAFA membership chapters were involved: the architects of Helsinki and Uusimaa, the architects of Häme, Kaakkoisuomi, Keski-Suomi, Pohjanmaa, Pohjois-Karjala, Satakunta, Savo and the Turku region.
The idea of the teaching package was to act as a resource for the architects visiting schools. Each lecture given in each school was personal and different, as the architect delivering it adapted it to suit him or herself. There was also a CD available, which was presented to the school library or the teachers. The entire presentation can be downloaded from this website. There were about 80 architects involved all round the country and they were listened to by about 8,000 children! Feedback has been extremely favourable and a follow-up to the event has been planned for the next few years.
In 2004, the event was aimed at upper-stage comprehensives and upper secondary schools. The Architects in Schools event was linked with the World Architecture Day programme which was coordinated by SAFA. The object of the exercise was to improve people’s knowledge of architecture, draw attention to the built environment and give schools the opportunity to form links with architects in their own localities and increase awareness of the opportunities that exist in the profession. The presentation was produced with financial support from the National Council for Architecture.
